How Much Sleep Can Parents of a Newborn Expect?

 

Newborns sleep for a relatively short time, and have a tendency to wake up easily – a pattern that continues, regardless if it’s day and night! According to a study commissioned by sleep technology firm Simba, as a new parent you can expect around four hours and forty-four minutes of shut eye each evening. In fact, for the first twelve months of your new little bundle’s life you will get around 59% less snooze-time than the recommended eight hours.

 

How Do New Parents Beat Sleep Deprivation?

 

Sleep deprivation goes hand in hand with being a new parent! Try not to get caught up in too many chores whilst your baby is sleeping, instead why not go for a cheeky nap too? Around twenty-five minutes should be enough to reinvigorate you, try not to nap too late in the day though. If at all possible, share the night-time feeds from time to time, a full night of sleep can be just the tonic.

Missing out on precious sleep can leave you feeling more than just exhausted. It can cause new parents to feel fearful, anxious and even overwhelmed by the enormity of caring for a newborn. Sleep is essential for our physical wellbeing – a lack of it prevents your body from relaxing and recovering from the strain of the day. The same goes for emotional wellbeing – poor sleep affects the brain, and contributes to bouts of worry and angst.
