How Do You Perform First Aid on A Choking Baby?

A choking baby will not be able to make a noise, cough or breathe, if your baby is choking act fast. Lie baby along your thigh with his head lower down than his bottom, and deliver five strong blows to the back (aim for between the shoulder blades). If this does not displace the obstruction you will need to turn baby over to face you and give five chest thrusts (aim for middle of chest just below the nipple area) – use two fingers and press downwards. Call 999, and in the meantime continue back blows and chest thrusts.

Remember:

1. Five Blows to the Back
2. Five Chest thrusts
3. Call 999

How Do You Perform First Aid on A Baby or Child Experiencing a Severe Allergic Reaction?

An infant experiencing an allergic reaction may have a rash, swelling or irritation to their face, hands and feet. Watch out for slow breathing, diarrhoea and sickness too.
Symptoms can develop very quickly so you need to call 999 for assistance. If you are already aware of the allergy your child may have an auto-injector to use (follow instructions on the packet). Continue to monitor and comfort your child until the emergency services arrive, and tell the crew if you have used an auto-injector.

Remember:

1. Call 999
2. Use your auto-injector if you have one
3. Comfort and monitor your child

How Do You Perform First Aid on A Baby or Child Experiencing an Asthma Attack?

An infant experiencing an asthma attack may have difficulty in breathing, panting heavily, or taking brisk, shallow breaths.
You may hear your child wheezing and their lips / face may display a blue tinge. You need to place your child in a comfortable position, and administered any prescribed medicine (an inhaler relaxes the airway and assists breathing). Keep calm and comfort your child. If you don’t have medicine with you, or you feel the attack is a severe one, phone 999.

Remember:

1. Place your child in a comfy position
2. Administer any prescribed medicine
3. Stay calm – If the attack is severe ring 999.
